The European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with the support of the Horizon Europe programme, have launched the Research and Innovation Career Observatory (ReICO, for its acronym in English). This initiative will provide reliable data on professional career paths in research and innovation in EU and OECD countries.

Why is ReICO important?

  • Attracting and retaining talent: Offering attractive and sustainable careers to researchers and innovators is essential to enhance European competitiveness and avoid brain drain.
  • Making informed decisions: By better understanding career paths, policymakers can design more effective policies to improve researchers' working conditions and, ultimately, boost the EU's economy.
  • Solid database: ReICO will provide a reliable source of data on research and innovation careers, enabling comparative analysis and assessment of the impact of implemented policies.

What does this mean for the future?
The creation of ReICO represents an important step towards building a more integrated and competitive European Research Area. By providing detailed information on research and innovation careers, this observatory will contribute to:

  • Improving working conditions for researchers: It will help identify areas where action is needed to improve job stability, salaries, and professional development opportunities.
  • Promoting researcher mobility: Policies can be designed to facilitate the mobility of researchers between different institutions and countries, enriching research and innovation in Europe.
  • Increasing investment in research and innovation: By demonstrating the importance of research and innovation careers for economic growth, ReICO is expected to drive greater investment in this field.

The launch of ReICO is positive news for the scientific community and for Europe as a whole. This observatory will provide a valuable tool for better understanding career paths in research and innovation and for designing more effective policies to promote scientific excellence and innovation in Europe.
