The Commission launches a new biotechnology and biofabrication center to support innovative companies

tecnologia een

The Commission has launched today a new Biotechnology and Biofabrication Center to support companies, particularly startups and SMEs, in bringing innovative products to the EU market and enhancing their competitiveness.

The Center will also help companies identify the EU-level support available to them and how to access this support to expand and grow.

The Biotechnology and Biofabrication Center provides easy, accessible information in all EU languages on:

  • EU funding sources available to biotech and biofabrication companies.
  • Research infrastructures that can support biotechnology or biomanufacturing research & development.
  • Resources to help biotech or biomanufacturing companies expand, including networks, pilot and testing facilities, and market insights.
  • Intellectual property protection that innovative companies are entitled to.
  • Authorization processes for new biotech products, such as human and veterinary medicines or feed and food ingredients, and the support available for applicants throughout these processes.
  • Regulations and requirements that companies must comply with when developing and marketing biotech products in the EU.

Hosted on the Commission's Your Europe portal, the Center will serve as an operational tool for easily accessible information on relevant EU legislation, funding opportunities, and business support networks such as the Enterprise Europe Network and the European Cluster Collaboration Platform.

The Center's continuous development will be supported by a dedicated working group of SME advisors within the Enterprise Europe Network.

Background

Biotechnology is one of the fastest-growing innovative industries in the EU, with the potential to revolutionize healthcare, agriculture, food, and industry in Europe in the coming years. A thriving biotech and biofabrication sector will be key to building a more competitive, innovative, and resilient EU, ensuring success in the green and digital transitions.

The Biotechnology and Biofabrication Center is a key product of the Commission’s strategy to boost biotechnology and biofabrication in the EU. This Strategy, published in March 2024, announced the creation of the Center to better support scaling up and regulatory navigation.
